Chicago, IL ─ Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced last month the annual School Quality Rating Policy (SQRP) for each of its 500-plus schools and Sauganash Elementary School continued to rank in the top tier with a 1+ rating. SQRP is the district’s method for evaluating each school for overall performance including key indicators, such as growth on standardized testing, student attendance, school culture and climate, as well as progress of English Language Learners. According to CPS, level 1+ schools achieving the highest rating; are nationally competitive and have the opportunity to share best practices with others.
For the first time, Sauganash Elementary also earned a perfect score in each area of SQRP’s evaluation. This placed Sauganash among only four schools in the entire CPS district (including all Magnet, Charter and Selective Enrollment schools). to earn an overall perfect score. The other Far Northwest Side school to achieve a perfect score was Northside College Prep high school. CPS is the third-largest public school district in the U.S.
“We couldn’t be more pleased about our rating and perfect score. It’s a true reflection of the hard work of all our stakeholders…students, parents, teachers, and community at large,” said Christine Munns, principal at Sauganash Elementary School. “The faculty is making a concerted effort to effectively adapt their teaching methods to English language and diverse learners with a focus on literacy, math and science.”
The school’s English Language Learners (ELL) represent 19 percent of the student body. “Our school is wonderfully diverse with 37 different languages spoken in the homes of our students,” added Anna Ihana, ELL specialist at Sauganash Elementary. Based on NWEA-MAP standardized test results, 76.3 percent of all students achieved their target growth rate in 2016. “And, our diverse and English Language Learners are a big part of this achievement.”
“We have a highly collaborative culture between the school, parent group and local school council to deliver the best educational experience for our children. The school is one of the neighborhood’s best-kept secrets,” said Elaine Fitzgerald, Local School Council Chair.
